Care-experienced children in Wales

Children in care across 22 local authorities · 2024-25

About this map

Every number here is a child or young person with their own story. These statistics show the scale of care in Wales, not the whole picture of what care experience means.

We say "children in care". The official statistics use the legal term "children looked after". Figures are official statistics from the Welsh Government's StatsWales, collection year to 31 March 2025. The publisher rounds counts to the nearest 5 and hides very small numbers to protect privacy; these show as — or [c].

Some sections cover abuse, neglect and exploitation. They're folded away behind a note so you can choose when to open them. If anything here touches on your own experience, Voices From Care Cymru is here for care-experienced people in Wales.
