Children Commissioner For Wales's Event for Care Leavers

Voices From Care were invited to participate in the Children Commissioner For Wales's event for care leavers 31st July 2013 held in the beautiful grounds of Atlantic College in St Donat's Castle. The dinner hall looked like Hogwarts from Harry Potter. The day was a great opportunity for young people to meet other care leavers from across Wales and share their experiences of leaving care with the commissioner. Some of the messages young people discussed were around the different levels of support young people got when they left care and their concerns about the welfare changes, in particular housing benefits. The commissioner will take all the views of the young people to the people who make things better and influence government policy in the future.

After lunch there were lots of activities on offer for care leavers to try out something new. Our group chose to do archery which was great fun! Apart from several misses (mainly from Chris) we had a good aim!!!! Other young people took part in rock climbing and came back really muddy! There was also a swimming pool at the college which was full of canoe boats. The challenge was to run over the top of the other boats without toppling them and falling in. There was also a vibe bus which had loads of technology facilities to use and have a go at making videos and have a go at being a DJ with the mixing decks. There was also manicures and massages for those who didn't fancy the other stuff. the day was a great success and we look forward going next year.

If you would be interested in coming along next time get in touch with Voices and we will let you know closer to the time.
