When I’m Ready: Spring -Summer 2019

Hi!  It’s been a few months since our last blog so time to up-date you, with all our When I’m Ready news here at Voices.

We recently delivered our first young person consultation in Cardiff.  We scheduled the event for a Saturday to enable any young people involved in college or employment to come along.  Now, you’d think working on a Saturday would really suck, but not with the amazing young people who came along.  Even though numbers were small, we did some outstanding work.  The young people took part in the “Wheel of When I’m Ready” – you have to see it to believe it! The themes we focused on from the wheel included:

  • Preparation for living independently
  • Knowledge and options
  • The positives of When I’m Ready
  • The challenges

We also reviewed timelines, to understand how and when young people were told about When I’m Ready and how much involvement they had in that decision, to continue to live with foster carers or to move into independent living.

We will be delivering another South Wales consultation on 24th July 2019 at our Cardiff office.  This is an opportunity to talk about the issues that affect you and meet other young people with When I’m Ready experience.

It will also be a chance to consult on a film we’d like to make about When I’m Ready and its impact on young people.  If you’d like to be involved, please contact me as soon as you can – jane@vfcc.org.uk OR you can message me on our Facebook page.

We are hoping to run a similar consultation with young people in North Wales.  So, if you have When I’m Ready experience and live in the North, we’d love to hear from you J

We have scheduled a conference for September to focus only on When I’m Ready.

At this conference we aim to:

  1. Raise Awareness of When I’m Ready
  2. Overcome barriers
  3. Provide young people and carers a better understanding of the scheme

The conference will take place on:

Wednesday 4th September 2019 in Llandrindod Wells in Powys.  It starts at 10:30am and will finish around 3pm.  If you’d like to find out more, come along, or get involved contact Jane on jane@vfcc.org.uk OR 07958 669 529

We are looking to develop some When I’m Ready workshops/awareness sessions for professionals and foster carers, giving them a greater understanding of When I’m Ready and its impact on young people.

We will start working on this in the autumn, but to make this training relevant and credible, we need your help!  It’s important for foster carers and professionals to understand the impact of When I’m Ready and how it affected you……was it a positive experience?  Did you have any input in the decision? Did it provide the stability you wanted?

I will be arranging another consultation in October to explore these themes, so watch this space for more details.

That’s all for now, but if you’d like more information on the programme or would like to get involved please do get in touch – we’d love to hear from you!

All contact information below.

Thanks and speak soon,

Jane
